I have been tardy in posting lately. Oops. Sorry, about that. I wondered what sort of witty and insightful thing I could talk about today, but came up short, so I thought I would just share that I am sort of excited about something in our homeschool today.
My kids are not fans of the subject of Math. They both do well in it, but they have often just done the tasks asked and forgotten it as soon as it is done. They also tended to drag their feet and struggle to make themselves complete the assignments.
I tried the Life of Fred books this year with my daughter mostly out of desperation. She had completed Algebra last year, but I knew that if I were to test her on some of the simple concepts, she would not be able to do them. So, I decided to do Algebra I again even though she had a passing (decently passing at that) grade in it before. I thought that if she would just struggle through she would at least get a worthy grade in it and hopefully remember it when she was done.
The other day, she came to me to inform me that she has almost completed the course and that I needed to order the next math book in the series. Advanced Algebra. YIPPEE! I hoped that she would complete this one with an understanding in the school year, but she has not only completed it, she is going on to the next one and has a good understanding. She laughs and seems to enjoy the math (as much as she can). She even does it first in the day, because she says it is now her favorite!
I did not get this series for my son going into the school year and while he is not as reluctant to do the work, it is not his favorite. The sources I have for him this year SHOULD only take about 20 minutes a day to complete, but he often takes much much longer on it and growls when I tell him to get on it.
So, I decided to chuck it for him and get him the Life of Fred books, too. Why not? If his sister who was as reluctant a math student as I could imagine now claims it as her favorite by using it, well, why not start him on it as well?
I am excited today with this and our happy find in this curriculum. This is not a witty post and it is not clever, but it was a sunshine moment for me, none the less, and well, we all need those from time to time. The Life of Fred books, however, I have found to be witty and quite clever, so maybe you would enjoy checking in to them as well.
Blessing to you and yours.
Hope you have a sunshine moment of your own today.
